Our objective is to facilitate the extractive industries’ contribution to poverty alleviation and economic growth through the promotion of good governance and sustainable development.

We are the Bank’s global sector management unit on extractive industries and related issues for all the main regions of the world. We are part of the Oil, Gas, Mining and Chemicals Department, a joint World Bank/International Finance Corporation Department.

We provide support to countries throughout the entire “resource cycle”—from awarding contracts to monitoring operations, to collecting taxes, to spending resources effectively for sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

From loans to technical assistance, to policy dialogue and analytical work, we lead a work program with multiple sector activities in more than 70 countries, of which almost half are in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Our Policy Division also carries out an advocacy role through the management of the following global programs or public-private partnerships:
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) multi-donor trust fund
The Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR)
Communities and Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining (CASM)
